Black Mountain $14.98 Black Mountain rises from within the Vancouver-based fiefdom of Stephen McBean, the hazy-toned singer and meandering songwriter who also heads up Pink Mountaintops. Both groups languish in a fog of psychedelia and sexual release. But while the latter opts for arty avant folk, Black Mountain lives up to its name with a heavier foundation. The self-titled debut on Jagjaguwar (its eight-song count and subdued cover art are a dark mirror to Pink Mountaintops) busts open half-lidded Velvet Underground fetishisms with squalls of Blue Cheer guitar, and further channels the heady sounds of the late ’60s with a moodily dwelling organ. McBean shares vocal duties with Amber Webber throughout, but she becomes an especially important factor on the twosome that closes Black Mountain, since her stoned and elegiac vocals make them something more than simply idling jams. “Heart of Snow,” for example, flutters like a warped and ancient recording of “Space Oddity” as Webber draws out the syllables in lines like “Heart of snow/Let go let go/But your sad wings/Won’t fly you home”; feedback and pounding drums periodically join in. It’s a damaged blues sound comparable to that of Jennifer Herrema’s Royal Trux outgrowth RTX, but McBean’s vaguely mystic lyrics also dovetail Black Mountain back into Pink Mountaintops territory. “Modern Music” and “No Satisfaction” rock a White Light/White Heat tumble that’s nevertheless well done, particularly on the former, which features some spectacular sax assistance from Vancouver area player Masa Anzai. The remainder of Black Mountain positions stoner rock chording over swirling vintage keys and the ever-impressive vocals of McBean and Webber. It’s a referential sound, to be sure. USED: Low Country Blues $9.99 Given his place in the pantheon of American rock music, Gregg Allman’s solo career away from the Allman Brothers Band has been generally disappointing. Perhaps that’s why it took nearly a decade between his previous album, 1997′s Searching for Simplicity (its title alone indicates his frustrations) and 1988′s over-produced yet underwhelming Just Before the Bullets Fly. A whopping 14 years later, Allman joins forces with roots producer to the stars T-Bone Burnett, hoping that some of the latter’s mojo can rub off on a singer who is one of the great white soul and blues vocalists in rock music. For the most part it does, as the duo choose 11 relatively obscure covers from classic artists such as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Junior Wells, and B.B. King that have clearly influenced Allman’s musical approach. The backing is organic but far from stripped-down with horns, multiple guitars, and even background vocalists supporting the singer’s patented crusty growl. From the opening raw thump of the ominous Sleepy John Estes’ “Floating Bridge” to a peppy yet intense take on Muddy Waters’ “I Can’t be Satisfied” and a fiery reworking of Magic Sam’s “My Love Is Your Love,” Allman sounds invested and inspired by this material and his musical surroundings. Veterans such as Dr. John (credited here with his real name, Mac Rebennack), Doyle Bramhall II, and Burnett’s often used rhythm section of drummer Jay Bellerose and Dennis Crouch on bass keep a taut yet easygoing lock on the groove. That’s particularly evident on the predominantly acoustic version of Skip James’ “Devil Got My Woman.” The horns that appear on five tunes never overpower the sound yet help propel Allman’s soul-searing performance of Bland’s “Blind Man.” Ditto for Otis Rush’s slow blues “Checking on My Baby,” which brings the vocalist back to his “Stormy Monday”-styled beginnings. USED: The Real Sock Ray Blue $7.98 Since Mojo Nixon now makes albums only every few years, his comments on current events can be somewhat dated. It wasn’t until 1995′s Whereabouts Unknown that he took on the 1991 Gulf War, and it wasn’t until 1999 that record buyers could hear his thoughts on the O.J. Simpson murder trial (“Orenthal James [Was a Mighty Bad Man]“) and the death of Princess Diana (“Drunk Divorced Floozie [The Ballad of Diana Spencer]“). Not that you couldn’t imagine what his outraged and outrageous opinions would be. Of course, some issues remained current, such as his dislike of the computer age (“I Don’t Want No Cybersex,” “Machines Ain’t Music/I Got My Mojo Workin’”), Disney and McDonald’s (“Disney Is the Enemy”), and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (“Rock N’ Roll Hall of Lame”).
